Welcome to the live blog of the opening round of the 2012 Little League Softball World Series. We will be updating you constantly on how the New Hyde Park 11/12 Girls Softball team is faring against their opponents, the Asia Pacific champions in the first game.

The games are also being broadcast live over the internet at the Softball World Series website, but there is a charge for viewership.

Hi everyone, welcome to our live blog – we're just waiting for the game to start in Portland. While we understand the weather is a little we back east, it's nothing but sunchine here in Oregon, with the game-time weather conditions at 82º with the wind out of the north-north west at 10 mph and humidity at 68 percent.

This Canadian team is from LaSalle, just south of Windsor, Ontario. NHP is 1-0 in pool B, having defeated Asia Pacific yesterday. Canada struggled with their defense, dropping the match against Hawaii.

Top of the 1st

NHP Kayla Fitzpatrick leads off and the first pitch is taken for a strike and we are underway. 0-1 is swung and the SS can't pick it up and Fitzpatrick is on the start the game.

Jenny Hickey is up now after getting the complete game victory. First pitch is low and Fitzpatrick takes off for second and makes it standing up. Next pitch is up and it's 2-0 as Fitzpatrick makes it to third. 2-1 pitch is swung on and popped up to the pitcher, one away.

Melissa Ward, today's pitcher, is swung on to left and it drops in for a hit as Fitzpatrick scores on the RBI single.

NHP leads 1-0

Catcher Anne Grimshaw takes for a ball as the throw down to second is on but Ward is into second under the tag. Next pitch is swung on and missed. ine drive down the left field line it rolls all the way to the wall, Grimshaw is on second as Ward scores easilly.

NHP leads 2-0

PR Hanna Arkin will PR for Grimshaw and heads out to second. 3B Maggie Donnelly takes the first pitch for a strike. Grounder past the SS into left for a basehit, Arkin slides in, tag is too late, Donnelly heads to second.

NHP leads 3-0

RF Nicole Kesler is up, bouncer allows Arkin over to third. Pitch is up high, 2-0 count. Another high pitch and it's now 3-0. Called strike 1. 3-1 is swung on and fouled. 3-2 pitch is nubbed as she goes after the runner, doesn't get her and runner will be safe on the FC, so runners at the corners.

2b Sohpia Jacoby is up, first pitch is taken and the runner takes off for second. Nubber back to the pitcher, takes the out at first and the throw comes into the plate as Arkin comes in and is called out at the plate for the double-play.

Bottom of the 1st

Leading off for Canada will be the cather, Emily Roy. First pitch from Ward is taken for a strike. Next pitch is high. Swing and a miss for a strike. Fouled off behind the plate. 2-2 is high so the count is full. Another foul ball in the same spot. Swing in and miss for the first out.

C RF is now up. First pitch is low for a ball. Next is at the knees for 1-1. Bunt for a foul, count is 1-2. Right in the middle for called strike 3 and there are two out.

Canadian SS Megan Lysinski swings and misses at the first pitch, a changeup from Ward. Again for strike two. 0-2 is chopped foul to first. Fly ball to center, Emma Nidermaier makes the catch for the final out of the inning.

Top of the 2nd

Canada changes their RF. NHP LF takes a swinging strike. Second pitch is grounded to third, long third and is in time for the first out.

CF Emma Nidermaier is up now. First pitch is high. Hits one to left, goes through the leftfielder's legs, Nidermaier rounds first and slides into second for the double.

Top of the order with Fitzpatrick is up. Nidermaier goes down to third on the ball one count. Grounder is hit past the thirdbaseman foul. 1-1 is high for ball two. 2-1 pitch is swung on and missed. Next pitch is fould off at the plate. Down low for ball three. Next pitch is high as the walk is issued and Fitzpatrick goes to second, which is legal in softball.

Hickey hits the first pitch into center as the run will score, Fitzpatrick heads over to third and Hickey will be on second.

NHP leads 4-0

Ward takes a pitch low. Second pitch is a ball, 2-0. Line drive, two hopper to the secondbaseman, relay not in time, 2 runs will score as the runner is on first.

NHP leads 6-0

Hanna Arkin will come in and run for Ward. Catcher Grimshaw is at the plate now. Arkin takes off for second and makes it as the ball hits her and the coaches are coming over to check on her. The trainer is with Arkin and is checking where the ball hit her, looks to be her right knee. Arkin is up and looks to be ok, gets a nice ovation as she is stretching a little. 1-0 pitch to Grinshaw evens the count at 1-1. 2-1 is skied to center and the centerfielder makes the catch, throw to third is not in time as Arkin taks and makes it.

Donnelly takes a ball and strike, followed by a foul off. Count is 1-2. Up high for 2-2. Swing and it is sliced into right for a base hit RBI single, Arkin scores.

NHP leads 7-0

Nicole Kesler steps in and takes the first pitch for a ball. Swing and a miss as Donnelly heads down and also gets hit by the ball, but she will stay at second. Pitch is inside for a ball, 2-1. Liner right back to the pitcher for an unassisted.

4R, 3H, 0E and 1LOB

Bottom of the 2nd

Canadian 1B steps in and the first pitch is called strike one. Next pitch his her and she trots down to first.

Canadian CF is next up, swing and a miss for strike one. Strike two on a fastball in the middle. 0-2 is down low for ball one. Pitch is low and inside in the dirt to level count at 2. Throw down to second is not in time as the runner advances to second. 3-2 pitch is fouled off. Down low again for ball four. So first two batters on first and Second

Canadian LF Hayley Davidson is up and takes a strike. Throw down to third and the runner is picked off at third on the delayed streal for the CS. Swing and a miss on a fastball from Ward. High and away is the pitch to run the count full. Pitch is called strike 3 for the second out and she knew it.

Canadian pitcher is up at the plate now. First pitch is low for ball one as Grimshaw throws to second to check the runner. 1-1 pitch is outside. Pitch is squibbed to the secondbaseman for the 4-3 out to end the inning.

Top of the 3rd

Canadian pitching change - Megan Lyzinski, who started at SS. Leading off for NHP will be 2B Sophia Jacoby. First pitch is taken for a strike. Next pitch is out for ball one. Swing and a miss for strike 2. 2-2 pitch is cut on and missed for the first strikeout for NHP.

LF Katie Tabritty is quickly 1-1. Ball is outside for 2-1 as she shows bunt. Strike on the inside corner to level it at 2-2. Full count now. Ball four called as she heads down to first.

CF Emma Nidermaier bunts as the runner heads down to second with a stolen base. 0-1 on Nidermaier as the pitch is high. Sliced foul on the 1-1- pitch. Two strikes now. Infield is in as the pitch is again foul. Next pitch is high to push the count to 2-2. It's a full count now as the pitch is high. Down low for ball four as Nidermaier hustles down to third, Tabritty is on third.

Fitzpatrick is up now and flies one to CF and the ball goes to the fence, and two runs will score, Fitzpatrick rounds third and she has an inside the park homerun, the first home run of the tournament.

NHP leads 10-0

Jenny Hickey is up now. Canadian conference on the mound. Due to the mercy rule, the game can be shortened if the opposition scores 10 runs or more. Hickey gets a base hit right up the middle and reaches first. Still no outs for NHP.

Melissa Ward is up and takes a pitch low. Next pitch is low for ball two. Grounder to the third baseman and the throw hits Ward, Hickey goes to third and Ward is laying on the grass behind first base. Trainers are over to her and she is sitting up. The throw seems to have hit her on the left elbow and she's nodding her head. She will remain in the game.

Runners at the corners for Grimshaw at the plate. First pitch is low and the second is skied to right but falls foul, 1-1. Pitch is high for ball two. Inside and low as the count goes 3-0. Grimshaw walks and the bases are loaded as the pitch is outside.

Maggie Donnelly is up now. Pitch is low for ball one. Sliced foul as the count is leveled at 1-1. They are leaving Grimshaw in to run over at first. Pitch is fouled at the plate. 1-2 is high and away. Fly ball to center and gloved by the leftfielder as there is some confusion on the Canadian team, probably thinking it was the last out, run scores.

NHP leads 11-0

Gabby Morales comes up and will PH. Morales takes the first pitch for a strike. High pitch for a ball, 1-1. Next pitch is low for ball two. High again for ball three. Ball four and bases loaded.

Jacoby is up as the East has batted around. Swing and a miss, strike one. 0-1 is called strike two. High and away for a ball. Another high pitch to even the count. Jacoby has pushed the count full. High ball four to force in a run as Ward scores the fifth run of the inning. Grimshaw at third, Morales at second.

NHP leads 12-0

Tabritty is up now. First pitch is high. Called strike on the batter. Low ball three as the pitcher is having trouble. Another walk as Grimshaw comes in to score.

NHP leads 13-0

Arkin will PH for Nidermaier. Bases are still loaded as she takes a pitch for a strike. Next pitch is fouled to the screen. Called strike three.

6 R, 2 H and 3 LOB

Bottom of the 3rd

Grimshaw is out in the field, and doesn't look like she has her cather's gear on, looks like she might be making the move over to first. Canadian Riley Mayville leads off. CF for NHP is Arkin, LF sub and Grimshaw will be at first and Donnelly will be catching.

Mayville strikes on on three straight

Canadian 3B Madison Thompson is up - their ninth batter of the game. Starts off with a strike. Pitch is low for ball one. Chopper foul as the count is 1-2. Another foul. Canadian pitcher Sohpia St. Louis is warming up. Called strike 3 on Thompson.

Emily Roy will go up now for Canada. She hits a shot into center for a stand-up double.

Lauren Rojinovitch, a PH will be in for Canada now at bat. Looked like she was squaring to bunt the way she was choking up on the bat, takes the pitch, 1-1. Swing and a miss. Swing and a miss strikeout.

0 R, 1 H and 1 LOB

Top of the 4th

NHP 1B Kayla Fitzpatrick takes a strike from new Canadian pitcher Sophia St. Louis. She is quickly 0-2 with a swing and miss. Bloop double to left and Fitzpatrick will be in under the tag at second. PR Nidermaier now at second.

Sing and a foul from Hickey followed by a ball inside. Pitch is low and Nidermaier advances on the wild pitch. Fiztpatrick will make her way to the bullpen to warm up. Pitch is poped to third and in the glove for the first out here. Nidermaier does not tag.

Melissa Ward is once again up and has a 2-0 count now. She has been on base all three times. 3-0 now with a ball. Pitch is low and a walk on four straight pitches.

Grimshaw now the batter. Straight up the middle, 0-1 called strike. Ward is at first. Called strike 2. Way outside and oes to the backstop as Ward goes to second. Grimshaw slices to left and the LF can't make it, two more runs will score and she has a double.

NHP leads 15-0

Maggie Donnelly is now up and takes a pitch for ball one. Skied to right, lets it bounce in front for a hit, Grimshaw will hold at third and runners at the corner.

Morales is at the plate now. Count is 1-1 on a pitch outside. Swing and a miss, way out in front. Skied to left-center and the LF can't make the catch.

NHP leads 16-0

Runners on first and second, Jacoby is the new batter, she is hitless so far and is quickly 2-0. Called strike 1.  Next pitch is high for 3-1. Way up high the ball goes to the backstop to load the bases.

Tabritty is up at bat. Takes a called strike one. Swing over the ball and a miss. 0-2 pitch is lined to third, 3B steps on the bag for the double play to end the inning.

3R, 3H 1 E and 2 LOB

Bottom of the 4th

Canada now 3B is at the plate with Kayla Fitzpatrick in the circle and the ball is grounded into left for Canada's second base hit of the game.

Lefty steps in, throw to second trickles into center and the runner is safe at second. Called strike two. Pitch is outside, 2-1. Pitch is high and away now, 3-1. Fly ball just foul down the left field line and the count goes full, 3-2. Called strike three, thow to third where Grimshaw is now and double-play.

New batter for Canada as the count is  2-0. Fly ball will driop in behind first for a basehit.

Rachel LeVang for Canada takes the first pitch for a ball. Swing and fouled at the plate, count is 1-2. Chpopper foul. Fly ball hit to the second baseman and she gloves it for the final out of the ballgame.

The East now has a 2-0 record in Pool B, while Canada falls to 0-2. The East will take on the Southwest Monday at 7:30 p.m PST, 10:30 p.m. EST.
