New Hyde Park 11U Athletics Have ‘Perfect’ Ending to Doubleheader

It is not the fact that the New Hyde Park 11U Little League Athletics Travel Team were able to sweep a doubleheader against the Malverne Mud Hens on July 22 as much it was how they were able to do so, taking the first game 7-3 and the capper not only a 10-0 shutout, but a perfect game as well.

Pitcher Marty Koch started the team off in the opener along with his battery-mate catcher Kristopher LaFroscia while Taylor Artigas had a big first inning single to drive in the first two runs. Defensively Joey Vitiello contributed assists on all three putouts in the first inning.

In the second game it would be Matthew Rowinsky’s time on the mound which would be in pursuit of the pitcher’s dream.

New Hyde Park quickly jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning capped by a base clearing 3-run double by Jack Ingoglia. Other contributors to the offense were Marty, Joey, Taylor, Alex, Matthew and Michael Sokol who blasted an RBI double over the outfielder’s head.

Rowinsky struck out the first two hitters while Joey Vitiello made a stop to close out the first.

Rowinsky then proceeded to retire the next 6 batters in order thanks to his defense backing him up. In the fourth inning the Malverne team attempted to bunt and catcher Marty Koch was able to get out in front of the plate and get the out at first. The fifth inning saw Alex Ivolella make a diving stop down the first base line.

Finally, in the sixth inning Rowinsky struck out the side to end the game, not allowing any of the 18 batters to reach first and complete the perfecto. He only 59 pitches for the win.
