After battling back to turn a 7-0 deficit into a 7-5 hole, the fell 11-6 at Garden City on Monday to fall to a 1-8 record in the conference this season.
The experienced Trojan squad proved to be too much for a young Gladiator team that allowed four runs in the bottom of the sixth after prevailing for five of their own in the top of the frame against fatigued Garden City pitcher James Duff.
Heroes: Garden City got five strong innings from Duff, who was pitching on short rest after throwing a complete game Wednesday in Virginia. The Trojans enjoyed contributions from the top to bottom of the lineup. Mike Borges helped set the table, going 1-1 with three walks, a stolen base, two runs and two RBIs. Brandon Samordich solidified the bottom of the lineup, knocking in three from the seventh spot in the order.
With a fatigued Duff on the mound, New Hyde Park's Kevin Towey, Rob Scatorchio, J.T. O’Callaghan and Andrew Pugliese led off the fifth with four straight hits and each came around to score in the five run inning that ended after Frank Cordio relieved Duff and allowed one inherited runner to score.
Quotable: After watching his team trim their deficit to two, the senior-laden Trojans bounced right back and scored four of their own to deflate any energy in the Gladiator dugout.
“They have five three-year starters and their experience really showed in this one,” New Hyde Park Coach Doug Robins said. “They did things the right way and made the plays that good teams make. We got in it and they took us right back out of it.”
The Trojans were able to capitalize with crushing two-out hits, scoring their first seven runs after two batters had gotten out in the inning. Garden City Coach Rich Smith said that “two-out run scoring hits can really break your opponent’s back.”
What’s Next?: New Hyde Park will return home to play the Trojans Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
