New Hyde Park Boys Majors Are Little League District 29 Champions

Majors division team wins championship for first time in 28 years.

For the first time in 28 years the boys Majors are the District 29 Champions.

They are the first boy’s team in any division to win a district tile in the last 21

years.

The road to the championship crown followed five games in the Williamsport tournament: 

Game 1: June 23, 2012 – New Hyde Park vs. Garden City

The New Hyde Park Boys Majors started off the 2012 Williamsport tournament with a solid 5 to 1 win over Garden City.

Pat Parente and Nick Pellegrino each had 2 hits from the one and two slots in the order.

In the third inning Pat McGoldrick led off with a single and driven in with a double by Parente. Steve Chambers followed with a double to make it 2-1 in favor of New Hyde Park after 3 innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Parente and Pellegrino led off with back-to-back singles before No. 4 hitter Rob McGuinness blasted a three run home run over the left field fence to make the score 5-1.

Pitcher Danny Hansen threw 4 innings of work, letting up one run with 9 K’s. Chambers pitched the final 2 innings, allowing no runs with 4 K’s. Brian Hoerter Joe Jonas and Kevin Gorman also contributed big defensive plays. 

Game 2: June 27, 2012 – New Hyde Park vs. Mineola

New Hyde Park won their second game of the tournament with a 5-0 shutout over Mineola, led by Danny Hansen with another well-pitched game.

New Hyde Park scored 2 runs in the second inning, beginning with Joe Jonas getting on base followed by a single by Matt Rowinsky, who were both driven in on a double by Dan Hansen.

In the fourth inning New Hyde Park extended the lead to 3-0 when Hansen singled and was brought home by Pat McGoldrick. In the fifth inning, New Hyde Park scored two more runs when Chambers was hit by a pitch and McGuiness followed with a hit; they were driven home on a Mineola error to make it 5-0.

Singles by Parente, Pellegrino, Rowinsky and two hits by Hansen led to the scoring. Defense was led by Brian Hoerter, Mat Rowinsky and Joe Jonas. 

Game 3: July 2, 2012 – New Hyde Park vs. Franklin Square

Parente, Pellegrino, McGuinness and Jonas all walked to start the third game of the tournament, as with 1 run in, Hansen came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs to hit a towering grand slam to put New Hyde Park up 5-0 in the first.

In the secnd inning Parente led off with a single, followed by a walk to Pellegrino, as Chambers doubled with two runners on to make it 7-0.

Rowinsky led off the third inning with a single. After a steel attempt, Hansen hit his second homer of the game to make the score 8-0. Jonathan Manfre followed with a walk, Parente reached base, and Pellegrino singled to make the score 9-0. In the bottom of the third, Gorman made a paid of defensive stabs to retire the two leadoff batters in the Franklin Square lineup to keep them off the score board.

In the fourth inning New Hyde Park put the finishing touches on it with leadoff single by McGuinness, Hansen followed with his third homerun of the game to make it 11-0. Manfre followed with a walk, McGoldrick singled and Parente and Pellegrino each walk to make the final score 12-0 and Hansen picking up the win from the mound.

Game 4: July 9, 2012 – New Hyde Park vs. Franklin Square 

Franklin Square worked their way through the loser’s bracket to force a rematch with New Hyde Park for the championship, ending up taking the game by a final score of 8-3 and setting up a final, sudden-death match.

Game 5: July 11 – New Hyde Park vs. Franklin Square (Championship)

Franklin Square jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but New Hyde Park managed to overcome as in the top of the second, McGoldrick led off with a walk, followed by singles from Rowinsky and Jonas to make it 2 to 1 in favor of New Hyde Park.

With one out, Manfre singled to drive in Jonas, followed by a single by Pellegrino to drive in the fourth run of the inning.

After Chambers was hit by a pitch, Hansen singled to make the score 5-1. In the bottom of the second, Franklin Square scored 1 run, tacking on an additional two in the bottom of the third before Pellegrino and Parente picked off the runner at second to kill the rally, but not before Franklin Square managed to cut the lead to 5-4. In the top of the fourth Manfre led off with a single, Parente reached on a fielder’s choice and Pellegrino followed with his second single of the night. Chambers then doubled to drive in 2 runs for New Hyde Park to pull ahead 7-4.

Chambers started the fourth inning but was was removed after 2 batters in favor of Manfre, who came on in relief in a situation with two runners on and 0 outs.

After a walk to load the bases, Manfre forced the No. 3 hitter to pop out in foul down the first base line to Pellegrino for the first out. Manfre managed to pitch out of the jam, but not before Franklin Square plated 2 runs to pull within one.

In the fifth, Manfre held Franklin Square scoreless, while in the top of the sixth with 2 outs, Chambers connected to hit a blast over the left field fence to give make the score 8-6 in New Hyde Park’s favor. Hansen followed it with a single, while a walk was issued to McGoldrick while Rowinsky had his third hit of the game to make it 9- 6.

In the bottom of the sixth, Franklin Square put its leadoff batter on with a walk, followed by a single. With 2 on and no outs, Jonas was able to handle a hit to make the first out at second. An error in the next at-bat allowed Franklin Square to pull within two before Manfre bore down with runners at second and third to force a grounder back to the mound for the second out and holding the runner at third.

McGoldrick then made a throw to Pellegrino at the plate to get the runner trying to score for a game-ending double play to seal the championship 9-7.

  • Pat Parente ended the tournament with a .385 AVG and .529 OBP
  • Nick Pellegrino had a .462 AVG, .588 OBP, 4 RBI’s
  • Steven Chambers had a .417 AVG, .500 OBP with 1 HR and 7 RBI’s
  • Rob McGuinness put up a .300 AVG with 1 HR
  • Matt Rowinsky had a .333 AVG
  • Pat McGoldrick ended the tournament with a .428 OBP
  • Jon Manfre had a .333 AVG
  • Dan Hansen had a .714 AVG with 3 HRs, 11 RBI and a 3 -1 record on the mound.

The pitching from Chambers and Jon “Ice Man” Manfre was greatly praised.

On defense Pat McGoldrick, Brian Hoerter, Joe Jonas, Kevin Gorman, and Jon Manfre game after game. 

The coaches give special thanks to Kevin Gorman who was the unsung hero of this team with his never die attitude. He along with Brian Hoerter, Jon Manfre, and rob McGuinness who all split time on the field, kept the team focused game after game leading the charge from the dugout every inning.
