Garden City senior running back Mark Ellis had a day Saturday, scoring three touchdowns and racking up 180 yards on four touches to help Garden City in a big shutout win over , 51-0, at Garden City.
Heroes: Ellis scored the game's first three touchdowns, one in the first quarter and two in the second, to give the Trojans a commanding 21-0 lead. He blazed through the Gladiator defenders on 61- and 65-yard touchdown runs and returned a punt into the end zone from 47 yards out.
Quarterback Mike Comiskey continued the first half onslaught with a 6-yard touchdown run and a pass to Ed Blatz in the corner of the end zone to give Garden City a 34-0 halftime lead.
The Gladiators were not able to move the ball on a stiff Garden City defense managing just a total of 45 offensive yards and three first downs in the game.
The Trojans defensive line made life miserable for New Hyde Park junior quarterback Nick Perrone pressing him all day long and not allowing him to get into any kind of rhythm.
The Trojans did not let up their offensive attack in the second half even after putting their second string in the game.
In the third quarter, sophomore quarterback Brett Stewart had a 1-yard touchdown run at the 7-minute mark to give Garden City a 41-0 lead.
In the fourth quarter, kicker Ryan Norton hit a 36-yard field goal and senior running back Christian Morreale ran the ball in from 14 yards away to give the Trojans the 51-0 lead and the game.
Garden City is now 3-0 on the season.
Quotable: "We started out a little flat but when Ellis broke that run in the second it gave us some much needed momentum," said Garden City Head Coach Tom Flatley. "He had a career day out there on the field."
New Hyde Park Head Coach Kevin Dolan said of the game, "If we had gotten the ball in the end zone on that second series, (Mark Ellis fumbled kickoff return in Garden City territory,) I think the game might have gone a little differently. I'm not saying we would have won the game but I think our players would have had a lot better energy and self-esteem moving on. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way."
Who's Next? The New Hyde Park football team will face Herricks on Saturday away at 3 p.m.
