New Hyde Park Girls Basketball Wins Blowout Against Westbury, 42-19

Many of the team's players spent some time in the game and made a contribution.

The (5-3 in ABC-1 conference play) beat Westbury (0-9) at home Tuesday afternoon with a score of 42-19.

Seniors Maria Katsoulis and Ciara McCullagh helped many of their teammates to have meaningful roles in the game, noted Head Coach Hugh Flaherty.

"Ciara tried to get everyone involved," Flaherty said, adding that she passed the ball well to her teammates. McCullagh has scored more than 800 points in her career so far; though she'd like to hit the monumental 1,000, Flaherty said she wasn't selfish and helped her team out.

Of Katsoulis, Flaherty called her the "meat and potatoes" and the "heart and soul" of the team. She also helped move the ball around to the other New Hyde Park players.

Senior Lexie Peveraro was back in the game after hurting her hand in the game against . She played for a considerable amount of time with tape on one of her fingers.

Turning point: Once New Hyde Park began scoring, the point deficit between them and Westbury was pretty consistently wide. Whether it was six points -- the difference between the two teams scores after the first quarter -- or the final score of 42 to 19, which was about the widest range between the two scores, the game was never terribly close.

Quotable: "It was a good game; we got everyone in," said Flaherty.

Bottom line: New Hyde Park faces Garden City Wednesday on Garden City's turf. Before the game, Flaherty said that his team needs to work on improving their defense.

"We need to stop their penetration," Flaherty said of Garden City. "We also need to concentrate on the shooter."

Key stats: Missed shots. Though New Hyde Park won with more than double the points that Westbury had, both teams missed a considerable number of shots. New Hyde Park missed at least 33 field goals. Westbury was also having a hard time getting their shots to fall.
