New Hyde Park Lacrosse Gets Big Win Over Wheatley

John Stevens's late goal gives Gladiators 10-9 win over tough Wildcats team on senior day.

This would be the last regular season game that attacker John Stevens would play in a New Hyde Park lacrosse uniform.

He made sure that it would be remembered, dodging through a Wheatley defense making a shot Thursday that slipped past goalie Nick Fasano with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter, thwarting a Wildcat rally and lifting the Gladiators to a 10-9 victory.

“It was great for John to get that big shot for us on his Senior day,” New Hyde Park head coach Michael Milio said. “The whole team played great today I just wish we could have scored like that a little earlier on in the game.”

The two teams had a see-saw battle for much of the first half of the contest, tied at three in the first until goals from Tim Brooks and Christian Trasolini brought it to 5-3 at the half. Brooks had 5 goals and an assist in the game while Trasolini tallied 3 goals and an assist.

Wheatley managed to take a one-goal lead on three tallies in the third from midfielder Greg Carlin and attacker Brian Delay before adding another pair in the fourth before New Hyde Park exploded with five of their own, with Brooks, Trasolini and John Stevens all scoring to even up the score at 9 late in the game before Stevens’s game-winner.
