New Hyde Park Little League Girls Team Heads to State Championships

Minor Little League team will play in South Orangetown New York for state championship.

The 10 to 12-year-old division of the New Hyde Park Little League girls team had another outstanding season this year. As a reward for their accomplishments they are headed to the state championships in South Orange on Wednesday night.

They knocked off Staten Island's South Shore Little League team 7-6 in the section five finals to reach the states.

Coach Tom Donnelly coached these same group of girls to the Eastern Regional finals last season and has high expectations for them this year.

"We've got a lot of talent on this squad," said Donnelly. "We've got some really good pitchers and terrific hitters playing for us."

One of the big hitters is Kayla Fitzpatrick who singled in the winning run against Staten Island in extra innings.

"She came through with the pressure of having two outs and two strikes against her," said Donnelly.

Victoria Mooney's big single tied the game in  the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to extra innings.

Catcher Ann Grimshaw's batting helped her team win a lot of games this season. She was instrumental in helping lead her team to victory over Franklin Square in the Long Island championship game.

The pitching strength rests squarely on the shoulders of Jenny Hickey and Melissa Ward.

The coaching staff includes Donnelly, Tom Grimshaw, Tom Fitzpatrick, Ray Ward and Will Hickey.

New Hyde Park will be one of six regional sections competing for the state championship beginning Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
