New Hyde Park Little League Roundup: 2013 Williamsport District 29 Tournament

New Hyde Park Little League (NHPLL) Boys Minors Division

Game 1: vs. Garden City South

The bats were busy at the Willis Avenue Field in Mineola on Monday, June 24, and when the dust cleared, New Hyde Park Boys Minors had a 9-8 win over Garden City South in six innings for their first win in the 2013 Little League District 29 Tournament.

Hitters on both sides were strong at the plate as the teams combined for 17 hits, including seven extra base hits. Phil Iandoli was solid at the plate for New Hyde Park 10U. Phil went 2-3, drove in one and scored two runs. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the third inning. New Hyde Park started strong, scoring three runs on three doubles in the first inning. In the third, New Hyde Park scored on a groundout by Aaron Glitelman, scoring Matthew Cipolla.

New Hyde Park added four more runs in the top of the fourth. Ethan Libonati kicked things off with a single, plating Julian Belardo and Steven Brendel. Garden City South came back strong, but came up a little short in the end. Ethan Libonati pitched for New Hyde Park, allowing only two runs over four and two-thirds innings; he struck out 10, walked five, and surrendered no hits.

Game 3: vs. Franklin Square

New Hyde Park 10U routed Franklin Square 12-2 grabbing an early lead against on Tuesday, July 2 at the Willis Avenue Field for New Hyde Park's third win in Little League’s District 29 tournament.

A total of 11 runs in the first three innings allowed New Hyde Park to put the game away early. In the first inning, New Hyde Park had RBI double’s by Michael Dominguez and Phil Iandoli. A two-run double by Joe Pomara, an RBI single by Julian Belardo in the second inning helped New Hyde Park 10U put some runs on the board early.

Nick O'Shea led a New Hyde Park offensive threat as he got on base three times in the game. He scored two runs and had one RBI. He doubled in the fifth inning. Justin Obidienzo got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed only two runs over 4-2/3 innings.

In the bottom of the first, New Hyde Park took an early lead, 2-0. Franklin Square tied the game up in the second. The bats went wild for New Hyde Park for the rest of the game, scoring 10 more runs over the next 3 innings, including four runs in the bottom of the third. Helping get those runs were Emmanuel Ajewole, Michael Hayes, Aaron Gitelman, Matt Cipolla, Steven Brendel, Michael Dominguez, Phil Iandoli, Joe Pomara, Julian Belardo, Nick O’Shea and Justin Obidienzo.    

Williamsport District 29 Minors 10U Championship Game

With Franklin Square’s win over Garden City on Wednesday, July 3, they once again fought their way back to face New Hyde Park in the Championship game on Friday, July 5. New Hyde Park’s pitching and hitting was on target. Steven Brendel pitched with control, as he took command of the mound to led New Hyde Park to their fourth win. Brendel threw into the fifth inning, holding Franklin Square to one run.  But Franklin Square mounted an offensive attack taking the lead 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

New Hyde Park was down to the final out in the top of the sixth, when they reached down deep and came up with big hits. Joe Pomara hit a double, Julian Belardo “quick as lighteng” beat out a single, then Matt Cippola belted another hard single to load the bases. “Mighty” Mike Dominguez slammed a double to score the go ahead run, and Nick O’Shea hit a long shot scoring another insurance run. Julian Belardo took the mound and shut Franklin Square down to seal the deal for his second save of the tournament.  New Hyde Park Wins! New Hyde Park Wins!

New Hyde Park moves on to play in the NY Section V Tournament where they face other district finalists from the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. The first game will be played at Rath Park, in Franklin Square on Saturday, July 13 at 9 a.m.
