New Hyde Park Senior Receives Scholarship to Monmouth

Senior Lucas Santangelo receives football scholarship, but not the type you'd think.

If you were to ask senior Lucas Santangelo if he ever expected to get a college scholarship for his football prowess, you’d have to make sure you were talking about the right version of football.

A multi-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and football, Santangelo, the Gladiator’s punter and kicker, recently received a football scholarship to attend Monmouth University (NJ) in the fall, however his family is more known for their prowess on the soccer field than the gridiron.

According to a 2010 Newsday article “Santangelo's grandfather played professionally in Uruguay and several members of the national team are family friends.”

Soccer runs deep in the family as Santangelo who was on the varsity team since his freshman year at New Hyde park Memorial, was trained by his grandfather since the age of three while older brother Zach, a former all-state player from New Hyde Park, currently dons the jersey of .
