New Hyde Park Softball Takes Cake in Playoff First Round

Lady Gladiators defeat Division 2-0 in opening round of 2012 Class A playoffs.

A.J. Burnett prefers a whipped cream pie after a win while Thomas Perez did it with shaving cream for the Phillies.

For the New Hyde Park varsity softball team, it’s cake – taking it and spearing it across the faces of teammates after a win that tasted just as sweet: a 2-0 victory over Conference III Champion and No. 12 seed Division in the playoffs Saturday .

New Hyde Park starting pitcher Lisa O’Callaghan had been feeling a little under the weather that morning, but the senior was not going to let this be her last time on the mound no matter how bad she was feeling.

O’Callaghan ended up lasting five solid innings and striking out five despite not getting on base herself with three K’s on her line.

“Lisa pitched great for us today,” New Hyde Park coach Jackie Rizzuti said, emphasizing what she means to the team in the circle.

Relief pitcher Geena Fornataro stepped in for O’Callaghan in the sixth inning to complete save and keeping the shutout intact for the Lady Gladiatory, who are seeded fifth.

“Our pitchers pitched really well for us and we got some key hits to knock in a couple of runs,” Rizzuti said. “It was a very tight game but I'm glad to see that our team persevered and will live to play another day.”

The Lady Gladiators got their runs in the second and fourth innings off of RBI's by Melissa Mastoridis and Julianna Dunne. Mastoridis who went 2-2 in the game hit a single in the second to score Geena Fornataro to give New Hyde Park the 1-0 edge. Dunne then hit a shot past the Lady Blue Dragon infield in the fourth to score Kayla Robinson to make it 2-0 for New Hyde Park.

Fifth seeded New Hyde Park will face conference rival No. 4 Clarke at W. Tresper Clarke High School on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
