New Hyde Park Sports Notebook: April 29 – May 5

There are so many sports out in the New Hyde Park area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.

Here’s what the local New Hyde Park teams have been up to this week:

New Hyde Park:

Baseball: The Gladiators lost two of three this week to Garden City. On April 29 they fell 4-3. Paul Reo was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two stolen bases.

The next day they were defeated 11-2. John Couchi had a 3-for-3 game with three runs scored and David Butler was the winning pitcher.

On May 2 they also lost by a score of 6-1. The go-ahead run was scored on a two-run single in the fifth inning by Tom Zwicke. 

Softball: The girls won all three games this week. On April 30 they won 16-6 over Locust Valley. Nicole Campbell and Mary Kate O'Boyle both went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

On May 2 they won big 18-3 over Floral Park. Amanda Turner had a monster game, going 4-for-4 with a grand slam in the first inning and a solo home run in the second. Kristen Hickey also went 3-for-3 with a home run and seven RBI.

The girls also put up a 4-3 win on May 3 against Bethpage. Lisa Pellegrino drove in the winning run on an RBI single to cap a three-run comeback.

Boys Lacrosse: The Gladiators were defeated on May 1 by Mepham by the score of 8-7. Anthony Vicario and Matt Byrne both scored three goals in the win.

On May 3 they lost 19-9 to Carey. Matt Robison scored five goals and Tom Mayer added four goals for Carey.

Girls Lacrosse: In their only game of the week they lost 17-15 to Mineola. Ashley Stavish scored six goals and had two assists and Marissa Aphan scored four in Mineola's first win of the season.

Herricks:

Baseball: The Highlanders swept Elmont this week. On April 29 it was an 8-4 win. Anthony Miraglia was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases. He also earned the save by tossing the final three innings.

The next day they won 9-1 as Tyler Idaspe tossed six innings and fanned nine in his first varsity victory. He also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

On May 2 they won 5-2. Anthony Miraglia went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Zach Osieczkowski struck out 12 batters in six innings while recording the win.

Softball: On April 30 the Lady Highlanders lost a 24-14 slugfest to Bellmore JFK. Cora Tadaglino went 3-for-3 with four RBI and two walks. Sam Klein went 4-for-6 with two RBI.

The next day they fell to Syosset 9-1. Kayla Beovich pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10. Sam Molloy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

On May 3 they defeated Calhoun 5-3. The go-ahead run was scored by Alison Forte who hit a triple to start the inning. Marissa Braito was the winning pitcher.

Boys Lacrosse: On April 30 the Highlanders lost to Great Neck South by the score of 15-4. Ben Todaro scored five goals in the game and Vincent Patrey added two.

The boys also fell on May 3 to Mepham 14-1. Matt Byrne scored four goals and added three assists and McKenna scored three goals.

Girls Lacrosse: The girls defeated Oyster Bay on April 29 by the score of 15-8. Lauren Bascelli had four goals and one assist. Claire Lanzo had three goals.

They were then dealt an 8-4 defeat on May 1 by MacArthur. Caitlyn Buckley and Erin Vaughn Ware each scored three goals in the game. Lauren Bascelli scored two goals for Herricks.
