New Hyde Park Sports Notebook: April 8-14

Patch will get you caught up on all your local sports action.

There are so many sports out in the Port Washington area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.

Here’s what the local Port Washington teams have been up to this week:

New Hyde Park:

Baseball: On April 8 the Gladiators tied 1-1 with Floral Park. The game was called after nine innings due to darkness.

The next day they were edged 9-8 by Glen Cove. The winning run was scored in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Jon Capobianco. Zaglica hit a home run for NHP.

On April 11 the Gladiators shutout Bethpage 2-0. Will Hickey hurled the five-hit shutout in his first varsity win. James Messina went 2-3 with an RBI.

Softball: New Hyde Park defeated Oyster Bay 4-1 on April 9 behind the storng pitching of Geene Fornataro. She struck out five and also went 2-3 in the game.

On April 11 they shutout Locust Valley 2-0. Fornataro was even better this time, hurling a complete game shutout, striking out 15 and allowing only two hits and two walks. Amanda Turner was 3-4 with three RBI.

Boys Lacrosse: They boys lost their only game of the week on April 9 by the score of 9-6 to South Side. Eric Gennari four goals to lead South Side. Matt Dluginski scored three goals for the Gladiators.

Girls Lacrosse: The girls lost both games this week. The first one was on April 8 to Carle Place by the score of 15-11. Megan Onderdonk led the scoring with five goals and added two assists. Jillian Graziano scored five goals for NHP.

On April 10 New Hyde Park also lost to Clarke 14-6. Despite the loss, Graziano scored five goals once again. Kristen Keller scored four goals for Clarke.

Herricks:

Baseball: The Highlanders had a tough week, losing all three games to Bellmore JFK. On April 8 it was an 11-4 loss. Justin Ganka went 2-2 with three RBI in the game. Joseph Correo won his first varsity game.

On April 9 it was a close 8-6 loss. Mathew Murphy was 4-5 with an RBI and John Hulkower was 4-5 with three RBI for Bellmore.

On April it was a 6-3 loss. Justin Garcia hit a two-run home run. The winning pitcher was McCormick.

Softball: On April 8 the girls were routed 14-4 by Baldwin. Carly Mertens went 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

On April 10 they beat Farmingdale 10-6. The story of the game was seventh-grader Marissa Braito tossing four innings to earn the win. She also went 4-4 at the plate with three runs scored.

Boys Lacrosse: The Highlanders lost both of their games this week. On April 9 they were routed 16-1 by Carey. Matt Robinson had five goals and an assist. Ryan Orlando scored the goal for Herricks.

On April 11 they were shutout 13-0 by Jericho. Michael Calisto totaled three goals in the game. Gerard Boniello had four saves for Herricks.

Girls Lacrosse: The girls won both of their games this week. On April 9 they beat Mepham 13-10. They came back from a 7-5 deficit to score seven straight goals. Sabrina Telmo amassed four goals for Herricks.

On April 12 they defeated Roslyn 15-8 behind Lauren Bascelli's career-high seven goals. Victoria Marano added three goals.
