New Hyde Park Sports Notebook: May 6-12

There are so many sports out in the New Hyde Park area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.

Here’s what the local New Hyde Park teams have been up to this week:

New Hyde Park:
Baseball: The Gladiators won both of their game this week to finish the regular season at 9-7. On May 6 they defeated Jericho 9-1. Fran Terrero went 3-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases to lead the way. The next day they defeated them 6-2. Anthony Simone broke the 2-2 tie with an RBI single which led to a four-run fifth inning.

Softball: The girls completed their regular season at 8-3  and won their first-round playoff game thanks to two wins this week. On May 6 they defeated South Side 8-3. Amanda Turner went 2-for-4 with a home run and Mary Kate O'Boyle hit a three-run home run. In the playoffs on May 10 they narrowly edge Division 4-3. Geena Fornataro was the winning pitcher. O'Boyle hit a pinch-hit RBI single to give New Hyde Park the lead.

Boys Lacrosse: On May 7 they lost a 14-12 shootout against Calhoun. Tony Cardinal led the way with five goals. Kevin Dolan added three goals. They also lost on May 9 to Long Beach by the score of 15-5. Despite the loss, Christian Trasolini had a fine game, scoring three goals with an assist.

Girls Lacrosse: On May 9 the Lady Gladiators lost a 13-11 high-scoring affair to Calhoun. In the loss, Jillian Graziano scored an incredible seven goals. Cici Bushati tallied nine saves. On May 10 they defeated Sewanhaka 15-7. Once again, Graziano led the way with five goals and two assists. Laura Rice added three goals.

Herricks:

Baseball: The Highlanders lost both games this week to finish at 4-13. On May 6 they lost 8-3 to Long Beach. Andrew Judge went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Jack Fagan went 3-for-4. On May 7 they also lost 8-5 to Long Beach. According to the head coach, it clinched their first playoff berth since 2007. Anthony Bianchini went 2-for-3 with four RBI. 

Softball: On May 6 the girls were shutout 15-0 by Hicksville to finish their season at 3-10. All the runs were scored in the second inning. Marissa Ciriello went 4-for-4 with two runs scored.

Boys Lacrosse: The boys lost both games to finish their season at 0-15. On May 7 they lost 15-5 to Elmont. Willie Johnson led the way with six goals and two assists. On May 9 the Highlanders were defeated 12-4 by Calhoun. Arthur Syed led Herricks with two goals with Ryan Orlando and Sal Cipiano adding a goal.

Girls Lacrosse: On May 6 they routed Freeport 16-8, they enter the playoffs at 14-1. Lauren Bascelli had five goals and one assist with Alison Ricchiuti had three goals and two assists.
