New Hyde Park Native Leads Notre Dame Over Hofstra Lacrosse

Former Holy Trinity player Sean Rogers scores hat trick in 6-5 overtime win against Pride.

Sean Rogers was “super excited” to step into James M. Shuart Stadium at Hofstra this past Saturday. He was probably even more emotional with his hat trick, dealing the Pride a loss with three goals in the game– matching a career-high total – including the deciding goal in Notre Dame’s 6-5 win and an assist to boot.

“Sean made big plays for us. He had chances all day and made them when they counted,” Notre Dame (3-1) head coach Kevin Corrigan said.

This was technically a homecoming game for him as the 6’ Notre Dame starting attacker grew up in New Hyde Park, getting his work on the field in as a 4-year player for Holy Trinity and with members of his family, friends and former teammates came out to support the senior.

“Going to Holy Trinity gave me the opportunity to really stand out, and show my game in advance,” Rogers said, “and being able to play varsity as a freshman isn’t really something that happens [in the Catholic High School Athletic Association].”

While playing for the Titans, Rogers had three different head coaches: Wayne Ament, Joe Jacovina and Tom Susko. Current head coach Stephen Tempone was an assistant coach when Rogers played, someone he says was very influential in his career as the two stay in contact today.

“All four coaches taught me many aspects about playing the game, but all four of those coaches taught me more about the importance of being a leader and what I needed to do in order to succeed at the next level,” Rogers said.

In his senior year of high school Rogers was named an all conference and All Long Island selection as well as all conference attackman of the year for 2008.

Last season Rogers started all 14 games that Notre Dame played, netting 25 points and 18 goals – a tie for the highest on the team – and initiated into the Notre Dame Monogram Club for “individuals who have earned the University’s varsity athletic insignia for their athletic or team support endeavors or who have been honorary Monogram recipients”, according to the school’s website.  Rogers has earned a total of two monograms thus far.

This year he’s added to it by setting career highs in all of his offensive categories, recently garnering .

Following a knee injury his freshman year, Rogers helped the Irish reach the finals of the Division I men’s lacrosse tournament but ultimately losing out to Duke. Rogers had one goal and one assist in the game after a standout performance with three goals in the quarterfinals against No. 3 Maryland.

With graduation rapidly approaching, Rogers’ plans for post-college are still unformed, other than the idea that he’d like to go into business or finance.
