NHP Girls Soccer Loses Home Opener, 3-1

The lost its league home opener Monday afternoon to Division, 3-1.

Although at first New Hyde Park came out strong and seemed to set the pace for the game, Division took the reigns and the win.

Heroes: New Hyde Park's Jillian Graziano scored the team's only goal in the game with an assist from Gabriella Tomasini. Both Tomasini and Senior Angelica Eranovic were fearless trying to get possession of the ball back and moving the ball around the field.

Additionally, New Hyde Park Seniors Savannah Campagna and Lucia Castellano were strong defenders who often kept the ball away from the goal.

For Division, scoring was spread out between Maggie Carew, Susan Ballantyne and Arianna Weingrad.

Turning Point: New Hyde Park and Division left the half evenly matched with one goal each, but Division came into the second half hungry for a win. New Hyde Park didn't come back from the two additional goals Division scored.

Quotable: New Hyde Park Head Coach Gary Gregory explained that for his team, "The work rate was not there. They're watching instead of  dictating play."

Gregory added that when his team had possession "they play brilliantly."

Division Coach Steve Kissane called the game "very even" between the two teams.

Bottom Line: Gregory noted that his team had a lack of hustle and determination. He will be working on moving off the ball with them.

Kissane was happy with his team's midfield play and would like Division to work on their direct kicks -- both making them and defending them.

Who's Next?: New Hyde Park faces Plainedge away on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Division will be playing Floral Park on Thursday in a non-conference game.
