Sewanhaka District Riflery Performs At Nassau County Meet

The team competed against their peers and will be ranked later this season.

The (2-2) participated in the Nassau County High School Rifle Coaches Association Tournament on Monday where five members of the team shot to be ranked among their peers and to put money toward their team dinner later this year.

Coach Alan Zarchy brought five of his six starters who paid $12 to participate in the shooting match at the Nassau County Riflery and Pistol Range. This is the one meet the students pay to participate in, Zarchy explained, adding that the money goes toward the team's season-end dinner.

The shooters who went to the meet were: Kyle Rudd, Christina Licata, Dan Sprat, Bryan Baracaldo and Nicky Thomas. The top three Sewanhaka School District team shooters were Sprat with a 176, Thomas with 174 and Licata with 173.

As far as scoring goes, the best possible score is a 200 with shooters getting a perfect 10 on each of their 20 marks. Zarchy explained that a 170 is a good score, a 180 is great and a 190, which Sprat has previously gotten, is outstanding.

"Christina had a great first target and then shot a minus five," Zarchy said. "One bad shot can blow your whole score."

Describing Sprat's shooting on Monday, Zarchy said, "Dan had a great first target but he had trouble with his gun on the second target."

Though the team received their scores from the meet, their rankings compared to their peers will come later in the season.

The Sewanhaka School District team will be competing against Valley Stream High School Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Valley Stream's facility. The Valley Stream team has been the State champions for the past four years, Zarchy noted.
