The New Hyde Park Fire Department sponsored a blood drive on Friday where willing donors helped “save a life” with their donations.
After filling out a small application, donors waited to be called and were escorted to the back of the room where they laid down on cots and had their blood drawn.
Afterwards, there was a table where donors could sip on water or juice and eat cookies or pretzels to help get their sugar back up.

One donor that day was Katherine Brautigam, 22, of Williston Park, who started giving blood every 56 days last year.
“I like helping people and my blood type is universal,” Brautigam said of her O-Positive blood type.

The process that Brautigam said “stings a little” takes about 10-minutes and is an important thing to do.
“It’s nice to help people who need blood transfusions,” she said.
