New Hyde Park Firefighters Respond to Call on Imperial Avenue Sunday

Fire and smoke reported in basement of Imperial Avenue home.

The New Hyde Park Fire Department responded to a report of a small fire in the basement of a home at 1501 Imperial Ave. on the corner of New Hyde Park Road Sunday afternoon.

The fire was first reported at about 12:57 p.m.

According to chief Brian Sherwood, the fire started in the basement of the two-story home when a mop and some rags wrapped around the hot water heater caught fire and filled the basement with smoke. Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire with a water can.

The home was occupied at the time, but no injuries were reported.

The fire was place under control at about 1 p.m.
